Collaborative culture in Figma between Product Design and Tech

Articles
Philosophy

Behind every digital product at Soluble lies the pursuit of one major goal: achieving agility, coherence, and excellence—for Soluble, for brands, and for users. And we've found that the way to get there is to care deeply about every single process integrated in the workflow from design through to the final product that gets seen and used.

At Soluble, two teams work aligned on each of these processes. Two disciplines that share a culture of constant communication, and that make sure results always shine: Product Design and Tech.

Want to know how they collaborate at Soluble to create better digital products with maximum agility? Keep reading to discover how Julia Vallina, Tech Lead, and Ada Fàbregas, Digital Product Designer, revealed it all in a live stream on our channels, which you can now watch on demand.

Soluble Goes Live: meet the Tech team

It's not the first time Soluble has opened the studio doors to show our processes and our workspace. Last summer we already told you, in a live stream with our Design team,, how we approach each project and how we organize our Design System. This time we're seeing the other side of the coin: development. Because our Tech team also gets the most out of Figma, for its ease of use and collaboration features, and has plenty to say about Soluto, our Design System.

Taking the handoff to the next level

At Soluble, Product Design and Tech follow the same roadmap and guidelines to facilitate the work of designers and developers, streamline processes, and ensure smooth project execution. Using the same tools, like Figma, and always working from our Design System, already makes the handoff much easier. But there's more: the Product Design team meets a series of delivery requirements, ranging from using consistent nomenclature and constant use of variants—one of Figma's newest features we discussed in the previous livestream—to componentizing all elements and resolving the design for every screen size. Ada walked us through step by step how they ensure the Tech team picks up the project in the shortest time possible and with every possible advantage.

Soluto, our guide

The Design System may be design's unsung hero in many cases, but not at Soluble. Soluto, our DS, is a fundamental foundation for making design decisions. Through it, Product Design and Tech share a common interpretation and frameworks to speed up digital product creation, ensure consistency, and minimize the margin for error.

Translated into code, Soluto is a single repository that can span everything from a technology standpoint, though each project has its own specific stack. Julia showed us, in a practical example, how the technical side of our Design System works, how foundations are translated, and how it's used to create a new DS.

For that, she took us to the Tech team's playground, Storybook, where the team experiments, validates, and tests. Here we can see how the different components of Soluto behave, and how important it is for reducing discrepancies between code and assets, speeding up the construction of each product, and improving communication thanks to a shared language between developers and designers.

The major advantages of this approach

Save time and effort, be more efficient, and most importantly, happier. To achieve these big goals, having a culture of organization and collaboration between teams is essential. How? By defining and maintaining the same standards, a unique file structure and nomenclature, and reusing elements. But also by maintaining constant communication between teams to align objectives, needs, and progress across all projects. That includes our DS too, which is constantly evolving and improving to be broader and more efficient every day. Because investing in Soluto is investing in better digital experiences, but also in the happiness of our teams.
