Brand Activation: Challenges and Opportunities

Articles

We always say that brand is a continuous construction and so is its activation. It's marketing, it's communication, but activation is so much more. It's the art of bringing a brand to life in every interaction, a constant and essential task for brands that want to connect with their audiences and thus endure. And these connections, rational and emotional, are intertwined today with technological advances that transform the rules of the game, in a world where social, climate, and economic crises shake us every day.

A few months ago we talked about the importance of authenticity for brands in turbulent times. In these times when attention is more fragmented than ever, brands face the challenge of connecting from that authenticity, from their purpose. With strategic vision, in an innovative way and with large doses of agility. Today we explore the current challenges but also the opportunities of brand activation to achieve a deeper connection with their people. Let's get started.

Experience as queen

Personalization stopped being a competitive advantage a long time ago to become something basic and expected by consumers. In the big data era, every interaction should be a unique reflection of the consumer, not just a sale, but a meaningful experience. The opportunities to achieve this have multiplied, putting brands that know how to turn data into emotions in a privileged position to build customer loyalty.

But with the power of data comes also the responsibility to manage it with integrity. Digital trust is now an asset of incalculable value: if people don't feel safe, they won't participate. Building digital channels that not only inspire, but also offer transparency and security, is key to ensuring consumption decisions without doubt or fear.

Brands have the opportunity to go beyond the transactional and use their information and channels to create communities based on shared values. This is the case, for example, with Patagonia. This new ability to offer authentic experiences, where every touchpoint reinforces the brand promise, is the new measure of success in activation.

Content that connects

In a world flooded with information, we're looking for something more than knowledge—we want content that resonates with who we are, with our experiences. Before making a booking or important purchase, we like to know what other users think, and if we can't find that information from the source, we'll research on social media. Few acquisitions escape this online investigation, even if we ultimately end up buying or contracting with a physical store—what's known as ROPO (Research Online, Purchase Offline). The key for brands to meet this need is combining their information with a more human form and substance, tailoring it to the right channel. Because it's not enough to have the right message; they also need to find the perfect channel to communicate it.

Faced with this challenge, UX Writing has become an essential tool for turning functional interactions into memorable moments. A clear example is Duolingo, which transforms routine notifications into experiences that reinforce its brand personality and create closeness. Another powerful tool at brands' disposal is user-generated content (UGC), a way to communicate on social networks by fostering community participation, conveying authenticity and trust.

Beyond offering relevant content focused on people, brands must also be able to generate it agilely, always with strategic vision and without falling into FOMO. Achieving that delicate balance between functionality, agility, and authenticity is what sets apart brands that merely communicate from those that truly connect.

Activism with purpose

Sustainability is no longer a trend, it's an imperative, a reality. Audiences demand that brands take clear positions and act with coherence. Yet slapping labels like "eco" or "sustainable" on a product isn't enough. Brands must prove through concrete actions that they're committed to change. Players like IKEA go further, producing furniture more responsibly and educating their customers on how to live more sustainably. Through these actions, the Swedish company reinforces its brand narrative and builds trust, preference, and loyalty.

In this reality, authenticity remains essential. Brands must embrace this activism by ensuring their actions are authentic and transparent, avoiding greenwashing. When consumers spot inconsistencies, the trust that's taken so long to build erodes fast.

Storytelling, community, and conversion

Social media has evolved from entertainment platforms into genuine commercial hubs where discovery and transaction coexist. Social selling lets brands deliver frictionless experiences, where a single click can take users from interest to purchase. This new model demands more than a seamless, direct experience: brand stories must be present as the thread that humanizes each step of the journey. Showing through content how a product is made, who's behind its creation, or what positive impact it generates allows brands to transform a transaction into a meaningful connection.

TikTok and Instagram have led this shift, offering tools that blend visual power with immediacy. Today, this integration of storytelling and sales is a path that lets brands amplify their reach and engage directly with users—and many are already leveraging it successfully.

What's coming back: social rewilding

According to the report "Accenture Life Trends 2025" and after years of a digital-first lifestyle, 42% of respondents identified their most pleasurable experience from the previous week as a physical activity. Only 15% mentioned a digital experience. Social rewilding is a growing trend in which people seek to reconnect with real-world experiences, prioritizing physical activities and authentic human connections over digital interactions. For brands, this new movement represents a significant shift in the landscape.

With declining online activity, especially on social media, activation strategies must adapt to find innovative ways to connect with consumers. Creating real-world experiences that resonate with brand authenticity may be the way to build preference among audiences that are beginning to seek balance between the benefits of technology and meaningful physical-world experiences.

Activate to endure

Activating a brand is not an isolated event, it's a continuous, dynamic, and deeply strategic process. In an environment where the possibilities of content, channels, tools, and technologies seem infinite and trends emerge and disappear at a dizzying pace, brands cannot afford inaction. Activation is the pulse that keeps brands relevant and meaningful in people's lives.

Against FOMO or analysis paralysis, authenticity is the compass that must guide every move, every connection. Connecting from the essence, from what truly defines the brand, will always guarantee coherence and scalability while ensuring we create genuine bonds with those who really matter.
